Make the seller responsible for identity theft
I love the identity theft opinion piece that Eric Johnson, a writer for the Sacramento Bee penned on July 26th, 2009.
“Horror stories abound of those whose financial equilibrium was shattered by this pervasive crime. Victims spend hundreds of dollars and hours trying to clear their records of purchases by identity thieves.”
I can atest to that!
“Why? Why should the burden of cleaning up an identity thief’s mess fall on the victim, when the retailer or service provider was the one whose irresponsibility caused the mess in the first place?”
Right on! I’ve been asking this for years.
“You want to see the end of identity theft in America? Then make retailers responsible for repairing the credit ratings of individuals they hurt by doing business with identity thieves. If given this responsibility, I’m willing to bet the retailer’s first step will be developing a more secure and verifiable form of consumer identity.”
Yessirree Bob! I couldn’t have said any better myself.
“It’s time to shift the growing cost and burden of identity theft to its rightful bearer: the retailers and service providers who are so happy to do business with identity thieves and so quick to deny culpability for the problems this creates.”
Amen.
